Virender Sehwag and Kumar Sangakkara continued their dominant form as they led Gemini Arabians to the final of the Oxigen Masters Champions League (MCL). In the semi-final, Gemini Arabians beat local rivals Sagittarius Strikers by 10 runs at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium (DICS).
Sehwag (83: 50b, 12x4, 2x6) and Kumar Sangakkara (62: 43b, 7x4, 2x6) added 118 runs off 73 runs for the second wicket off 73 balls to propel Arabians to an impressive 191 for five in their 20 overs.
In their response, Sagittarius Strikers were restricted to 181 for six in their 20 overs.
Earlier, Arabians skipper Sehwag continued their rampant run in the tournament with a brisk start. He was aided very well by Sangakkara. Towards the end of the Arabians innings there was a mini collapse, as Tino Best (three for 24) picked up three quick wickets.
But the total proved to be a tough ask for Strikers.
Throughout the course of the chase, Strikers lost wickets at regular intervals. The loss of their skipper Adam Gilchrist for just 12 was toughest to handle.
The only man to hold the innings together was MahelaJayawardene (65: 52b, 9x4), but it was too little too late.
Later, Phil Mustard (48 not out: 18b, 2x4, 5x6) played a valiant knock but it was not enough as Arabians ran home winners. For Arabians, seamer Graham Onions (three for 37) was the most successful bowler.
The second semi-final will be played between Virgo Super Kings and Leo Lions on Friday at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.
